Whalesafari at Peninsula de Valdes (Argentina)

As part of our trip around Patagoina, we went out to the east coast of Argentina to go on whale safari off the shore of Peninsula de Valdes. It was great to throw off the hiking boots after a couple of weeks of hiking and let the toes air in flip flops in the sun!

It was not very easy to get good pictures of the whales, especially in the large waves. But they made a massive impression on us, and it is hard to describe the feeling when the big creatures suddely came out of the water just a few meters from our small boat. Some were so close we could have reached out and thouched them!

A gigantic whale sticking its head up, this picture is taken very close - almost felt a bit too close at one point!

Peninsula de Valdes has a rich animal life. It is actually the only place in the world where killer whales comes into the mainland to mate. Unfortunately, it was not season for this the time of year we visited, but we saw plenty of other beauiful animals, inculding sealions and a huge colony of penguins.

These creatures seem a bit lazy, just laying there sunbathing all day....

One of the days, we left the airing on the tent open. Not a very clever thing to do when your tent is set on a beach with the finest sand. Everything we owned was covered in sand when we got back! We had to empty the tent, turn it inside out to try to get the sand out, and all our utensils, boilers etc had to be rinsed in water. We found sand in our gear for months afterwards...
