This weekend I attended another avalanche training. This was a three day course that you need to take to become guide for wintertrips in DNT for example.
There was also a group training their rescue dogs, and they had the Seaking rescue helicopter flying in to practise with them. It was extremely noisy, but impressive to watch the helicopter fly in and land in the snow!
A big portion of our training was how to rescue someone that is taken by an avalanche. We made an area where there had supposedly been an avalanche and then made scenarios where things were buried and we had to search to find them again. It was very practical and an excellent way to learn how to use the probes, beacons etc properly. I bet that at least half of the people skiing around with this gear have no idea how to use it properly!
Saturday night, we got a task to make a safe route from Haukeliseter to Holmevass (same trip I have written about here) and then we were going to test it on Sunday. The view was around zero Sunday morning, so instead we ended up testing various routes into the bottom of Kistenut. A really good exercise in flat light and close to zero visibility, as you cannot see how steep it is, where the big portions of snow are etc.
But on or way back towards Haukeliseter, it cleared up a bit, and the cloud formations almost made it look like there was an additional huge mountain behind the cabin. Ok, it doesn't show very well in the below picture, but use your imagination people! ;-)
