New Year´s Eve at Svalbard

I was just invited to a skiing trip for New Year's and started thinking about where I celebrated last year. It was actually in Longyearbyen at Svalbard. It was pitch dark 24/7, so it didn´t really matter what time of the day we went out skiing as we could hardly see anything anyway. So what better way to end one year and start a new one with testing new ski-equipment on a glacier faaaaar north in he land of the polar bears?!

Well, the risk of polar bears actually made us a bit nervous the further we skied away from the civilization. Since it was pitch dark we could only see what was it the light from our head lamps (which was not that much!), and our skis were making a lot of noise on the snow, so if there had been any bears looking for a New Year´s meal, we would have been an easy target...

Longyearbyen seen from the start of the Longyear glacier.

This was the closest we got to a big, white bear. Luckily, I guess....
